Kevin Cahill turns aside progressive challenge in Hudson Valley

A veteran upstate assemblyman Tuesday trailed in a Democratic primary battle with a little-known Democratic Socialists of America-endorsed climate activist.

In what could be a shocking upset, 13-term Assemblyman Kevin Cahill was behind Sarahana Shrestha in the Hudson Valley-based 103rd Assembly district.

At 11 p.m., Shrestha led with 7,702 votes, or 52% compared with 7,173 for Cahill, or 48%, with 17% of the votes counted.

The race marked the first effort by the DSA, which famously helped Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) win her seat, to challenge a Democratic incumbent outside New York City.

Cahill has represented the district stretching from New Paltz to Kingston for more than two decades and has built a mainstream liberal record.

Shrestha, an immigrant from Nepal, touts her support for the Green New Deal and other progressive causes.
